Why Do Leap Years Exist?

Earth takes approximately 365.24219 days (365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 45 seconds) to orbit the Sun once. Because our calendar counts 365 full days, without leap days, our calendar would drift by nearly 6 hours every single year, causing the seasons to drift by 24 days every century!

Every 4 Years (+1 Day)

Adding a leap day every 4 years compensates for 0.25 days per year, slightly overcorrecting by 11 minutes per year.

Century Skip (100 Years)

To counter the 11-minute overcorrection, century years divisible by 100 (like 1700, 1800, 1900, 2100) are NOT leap years.

Quad-Century (400 Years)
