What is a Leap Year?
A leap year is a calendar year that contains an additional day, making it 366 days long instead of the usual 365 days. This additional day is added to February, making it 29 days long.
Leap Year Rules:
- A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4
- However, if the year is divisible by 100, it is NOT a leap year, unless...
- The year is also divisible by 400, then it is a leap year
Examples:
- 2024 is a leap year (divisible by 4)
- 2100 is not a leap year (divisible by 100 but not by 400)
- 2000 was a leap year (divisible by 400)
- 2023 was not a leap year (not divisible by 4)
Why do we need leap years?
A complete orbit of Earth around the Sun takes approximately 365.2422 days. To keep our calendar aligned with the seasons, we add an extra day every 4 years, with exceptions for century years as noted above.
