Understanding Goods and Services Tax (GST)

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a comprehensive indirect, destination-based tax levied on the manufacture, sale, and consumption of goods and services throughout India and across dozens of countries globally.

For small business owners, freelancers, ecommerce sellers, and consumers, knowing how to accurately calculate GST is essential to prevent invoice discrepancies and filing errors.

1. GST Exclusive Calculation (Adding GST to Base Cost)

When your price does not include tax and you need to compute the total invoice amount:

Mathematical Formulas:

  • GST Amount = (Original Cost × GST Rate) ÷ 100
  • Net Price (Total) = Original Cost + GST Amount

Step-by-Step Example:

If consulting services cost ₹20,000 and the GST slab is 18%:

  • GST Amount = 20,000 × (18 / 100) = ₹3,600
  • Total Invoice = 20,000 + 3,600 = ₹23,600
  • CGST (9%) = ₹1,800, SGST (9%) = ₹1,800

2. GST Inclusive Calculation (Reverse GST Calculation)

When you receive a bill or final retail price and need to extract the underlying product value before tax:

Mathematical Formulas:

  • Original Cost = Total Price ÷ (1 + (GST Rate ÷ 100))
  • GST Amount = Total Price - Original Cost

Step-by-Step Example:

You purchase an electronic gadget for ₹11,800 (inclusive of 18% GST):

  • Original Cost = 11,800 ÷ 1.18 = ₹10,000
  • GST Paid = 11,800 - 10,000 = ₹1,800

Standard GST Slabs Overview

  • 5%: Packaged basic foods, domestic air travel, transport services.
  • 12%: Business class air tickets, specified processed foods, state-run lotteries.
  • 18% (Standard): IT services, software, capital goods, financial services, telecom.
  • 28% (Luxury/Sin): Automobiles, tobacco, gaming, luxury goods.
